1. Product description

A black clay chawan—a surprising adaptation of the ancient kurinuki technique to modern design. A raw, wild exterior texture and an antique gold interior.

2. Purpose

A bowl for traditionally preparing and drinking matcha.
It can also be used for whiskey and other alcoholic beverages, as well as loose-leaf teas, cocoa, small portions of soups, or as a collector's item, especially in Japandi-style interiors.

3. Technique and execution

  • Made entirely by hand using the kurinuki method , i.e. sculpting from a single lump of clay by hewing and chipping away fragments.
  • The raw, irregular form retains traces of the tools and creative process.
  • The interior is carefully profiled and covered with structural glaze in the color of old gold.
  • The outer surface is left almost unglazed, naturally rough, with a texture that can be felt under the fingers.
  • Fired at high temperature – durable and resistant to everyday use.

4. Colors and character

  • Exterior: matte, raw black clay with an organic texture.
  • Interior: semi-matte, structural, old gold color.
  • The matte interior and raw, "wild" exterior give the impression of being carved into stone.
  • The whole thing is in the wabi-sabi aesthetic, but with a distinct, contemporary accent.

5. Dimensions and capacity

  • Capacity: approximately 200 ml .

6. Functionality

  • Stable, fits well in the hands thanks to its rough texture.
  • Thick walls maintain the temperature of the drink.
  • Perfect for matcha – both for frothing with a chasen and for drinking.
  • Hand washing recommended to maintain beauty for years to come.

7. Unique Features

  • Each piece is unique because the clay is hand-hewn.
  • The contrast between the "wild" surface and the smooth interior creates a surprising effect and attracts the eye.
  • The clay structure on the outside is very sensory – the bowl engages touch almost as much as sight.

8. What does the user gain?

  • An experience close to the Japanese tea ceremony, but with a modern, original twist.
  • An item of great aesthetic value – decorative even without use.
  • A bowl that builds a ritual and turns everyday matcha into a small celebration.
  • A unique gift for lovers of ceramics and Japanese culture.
